The civilization that developed in India after the Indus Valley Civilization is known as Aryan/Vedic Civilization. We get information about this Vedic period from the Vedas, of which the Rigveda is the most important. The Vedic period is divided into the Rigvedic/Pre-Vedic period (1500–1000 BCE) and the later Vedic period (1000–600 BCE)

Highlights of Vedic Culture:
- During this period the society was clearly divided into four castes namely Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra.
- Gotra system came into existence during the post-Vedic period
- It was during this time that prayers to the god Vishnu began.
- It was during this time that idol worship began.
- Ashram system came into existence during this period.
- Celibacy – the time of acquiring knowledge in the Guru’s house.
- Grihastha – the time to get money and work by getting married.
- Wanprastha – Going to the forest for contemplation of God.
- Sannyasa – Contemplating God for salvation by giving up all association.
