what is the festival of Navratri :

There are many beliefs behind celebrating the festival of Navratri. According to a mythological belief, there was a demon named Mahishasura. After getting the boon of being immortal from Brahma ji, he started persecuting the gods. Disturbed by the tyranny of Mahishasura, all the gods went to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. After this, the three deities invoked Adi Shakti. Due to the anger of Lord Shiva and Vishnu and other deities, a radiance appeared from the mouth, which turned into a woman. Other gods provided him with weapons.

After this, Goddess Durga challenged Mahishasura after receiving powers from the gods. The battle of Mahishasura and Goddess Durga started, which lasted for 9 days. Then on the tenth day, Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura. It is believed that during these 9 days, the gods gave strength to the goddess by worshiping her every day. Since then the festival of Navratri started celebrating.

What is the importance of Navratri:

Navratri is a celebration of ‘Shakti Tattva’. It is celebrated in autumn and ‘Shakti’ is worshiped in three forms – will power, action power and knowledge power. According to the Puranas (or Kalpas), Shakti is worshiped in the form of Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Maha Saraswati. Devi Mahatyam and Srimad Devi Bhagavatam are chanted for nine days.

It is a wonderful festival where on one hand there is celebration and on the other hand you can go deep within yourself and gain knowledge.

There are six vices of the mind – Kama (desire), Anger, Greed, Pagal (Hatha), Moha and Matsyyam (jealousy). These disorders can be beyond the control of any human being and then they become a hindrance in the spiritual path. In these nine days, by the grace of ‘Shakti’, these disorders are automatically removed.

That is why during these nine days penance and worship is done and meditation is also of great importance.
